You Said You’d Support Us, You Didn’t

Reading Time: < 1 minute

To the Alabama House of Representatives:

You said you’d support the LJCC and the Jewish community in the wake of bomb threats. But you didn’t. When it came to taking the necessary action, you failed.

I remember the words very clearly- “This body stands with the Jewish community and others affected by these threats.” After all, I drafted the resolution. Just a mom of two girls. Just one of hundreds of families terrorized by bomb threats at my children’s preschool. It was unnerving, scary and frustrating. As parents, we felt helpless. We hugged our children tighter. We told them we loved them even more often. We were often unsure how to answer our children’s questions. We were always on alert and always fearing the next call or text.

We needed your help. You pledged support. Yet, you didn’t come through. You told us what we wanted to hear. It wasn’t enough. That’s insulting.

SB 331, a non-controversial bill with bi-partisan support to make any threat against a school or place of worship an act of terrorism, quickly cleared a Senate committee, the full Senate and a House committee. It sat awaiting a final vote for one month. I’m not going to go through the laundry list of how you wasted your time and my taxpayer dollars. That list is always entirely too long. This vote would’ve taken you just a few minutes. Just a few minutes to make ALL of our schools and ALL of our places of worship safer. This is legislation that truly would have impacted nearly EVERY citizen of Alabama and would have fulfilled a campaign promise nearly everyone one of you made to keep our children, schools and communities safe.

Sincerely,

A very disappointed parent

I left a career in TV news for more time with my two pint-sized blessings and to become a blessing to someone else. It's our messy, beautiful journey.
