Summer Bucket List

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Store shelves are stocked with school supplies. Supply lists are out. Tax free weeks are approaching. Summer is quickly coming to an end. With school starting in less than three weeks, each day is becoming more precious. To make these last few weeks without after school activities, homework and other obligations that seem to steal away family time count, we convened a special family summit to create a summer family bucket list.

What made the bucket list?

1. Hiking/Camping weekend

We’ve been discussing a family camping weekend for years. There are two state parks in our backyard. Plus, we already own all the gear- tent, sleeping bags, mess kits. Time to stop talking and get hiking.

2. Epic milkshakes

No doubt your social media feeds have been filled with these massive, mouth watering, mega-sugar (and calorie) filled treats. Think an extra large shake almost a few feet high topped with cupcakes, cookies, cotton candy, lollipops. Numerous ice cream shops and bakeries are now offering this sweet treats. But the spot to head to in the Birmingham, Alabama area is definitely K&J’s Elegant Pastries.

3. Color as a family

There’s something very soothing about coloring between the lines. Perhaps this will become a new (and much needed) stress reliever.

4. Game night

Cannot believe I was even the one to suggest this. Normally, any mention of playing games is meant with groans. They typically end with someone parading around a table dancing and boasting and someone else in tears. But it’s an easy way to spend a night together as a family with the TV, iPads, and phones turned off.

5. Help Evie learn how to do a cartwheel

Loved this suggestion! My six-year-old just mastered (kinda) this skill. Now, she wants to teach her sister. Any sister-sister bonding or safe child-lead activity definitely gets the green light.

6. Dance party

This was a nightly activity in our house a few years ago. At some point, dance parties stopped. Not sure why. Granted- we were positive that anyone who could see into our house thought we were nuts. But it was fun to get a little footloose and fancy free.

7. Make cupcakes

Who isn’t looking for an excuse to lick a battered spoon or the leftover icing? We definitely love sweets. This is always a great way to work on math skills.

What’s on your summer bucket list?

Honora

I left a career in TV news for more time with my two pint-sized blessings and to become a blessing to someone else. It's our messy, beautiful journey.
